THREE PHASE INNOVATIONS

FAQ

HAVE A QUESTION?

See our list of FAQ below to learn more about our products and what Three Phase Innovations has to offer.

What are the power requirements for the training model?

The model operates on 120/208V three-phase power. If your facility already has 120/208V service, only an appropriate outlet is required prior to delivery so training can be conducted on the same day.

Outlet Requirement:
30 Amp, 3-phase WYE 120/208VAC, 4-pole, 5-wire grounding twist-lock outlet.

If three-phase power is not available, we offer a single-phase to three-phase conversion equipment package.

This package allows the model to be powered from a standard 120V outlet (non-GFCI circuit) and includes the following components:

  • 120V to 240V transformer – steps standard 120V up to 240V

  • 3-phase converter – converts 240V single-phase into 240V three-phase (delta)

  • 3-phase transformer – converts 240V delta into a 120/208V WYE system required for the model

This system provides a reliable solution for facilities without existing three-phase power and also offers added flexibility for various training environments.

What are the dimensions of the model? Will it fit through a standard classroom door?

Each model is custom-built to meet the customer’s needs, but we offer standard cabinet configurations with the following approximate dimensions:

Three-Pole Cabinet Model (Fully Assembled):

  • Length: 12 ft 4 in (148 inches)

  • Width: 32 ¼ inches

  • Height: 77 ½ inches (from floor to top of pole)

  • Approximate Weight: 1,000 lbs (fully equipped)

Two-Pole Cabinet Model:

  • Length: 6 ft (72 inches)

  • Width: 32 ¼ inches

  • Height: 77 ½ inches

  • Approximate Weight: 500 lbs (fully equipped)

All cabinet models are mounted on heavy-duty 5-inch caster wheels, designed to support the full weight of the unit while allowing for smooth and controlled movement within a classroom or training facility. The casters feature locking mechanisms to securely hold the model in place during operation.

When training is complete, the model can be easily rolled out of the way, making it both practical and efficient for classroom use.

Because of their size and weight, doorway access and placement should be considered, but units can typically be maneuvered through standard double doors. We are happy to assist customers in planning for delivery and placement.

What is the typical lead time after placing an order?

Each model is custom-built to meet the customer’s specific requirements, including transformer configurations, cabinet style, and overall design complexity.

Typical build times:

  • Overhead Models (2-pole or 3-pole): Approximately 3 to 4 months

  • Underground (URD) Models: Approximately 4 to 6 months, depending on the complexity of the design

A more precise timeline will be provided once the final specifications are confirmed.

What transformer configurations are available?

Our pole-mounted transformers are designed for quick installation and removal using wing nuts, allowing maximum flexibility in a training environment.

Customers can configure both the primary (high side) and secondary (low side) to match their specific training needs.

Primary (High Side) Options:

  • 120V (WYE) or 208V (DELTA) configurations

  • Single voltage or dual voltage capability

  • Single or double bushing configurations

  • Additive or subtractive polarity, or dual polarity

Dual voltage and dual polarity options allow instructors to quickly switch configurations using simple toggle controls, reducing setup time and increasing training efficiency.

Secondary (Low Side) Options:

  • Voltage range from 120V to 600V

  • Available in 2, 3, or 4 bushing configurations

Four-bushing secondaries allow for easy series and parallel connections, closely simulating real-world transformer applications.

How long have you been in business?

The concept and development of our training models began in 2009, with years of refinement and real-world testing.

Three Phase Innovations was established in 2016, and we have since delivered over 70 models across the United States and Canada.

We proudly serve utilities, apprenticeship programs, and training institutions, helping develop the next generation of skilled lineworkers.

Does the model include any protection devices?

Yes. The model is designed with multiple layers of protection to ensure safe operation and to prevent damage during training.

The primary protection device is the Fault Current Reactor (FCR). This system limits fault current by introducing adjustable resistance into each phase, helping to reduce current flow in the event of an incorrect connection. This allows students to safely make mistakes while protecting the equipment.

In addition to the FCR, the model includes:

  • Breaker protection at each transformer location, simulating real-world cutout protection

  • A three-phase breaker panel at the end of the system

  • Integrated toggle switch breakers (1-amp and 5-amp) throughout the model

These protection devices work together to provide a layered safety system. In most cases, the Fault Current Reactor will limit and absorb fault conditions. However, if a fault exceeds safe limits, the breaker system will trip, providing additional protection for both the equipment and the user.

This combination of protection allows for realistic training scenarios while maintaining a high level of safety and equipment reliability.

Do you offer training on the equipment?

Yes. Training is included with every model purchase and is mandatory for first-time customers to ensure safe and effective operation.

Training consists of a comprehensive 8-hour, hands-on session. By the end of the training, your team will have the knowledge and confidence to operate the model independently—often to the point of demonstrating proper operation back to the instructor.

Most customers (approximately 95%) choose to have their model delivered and training conducted on-site at their facility. This allows your entire team to be trained in the actual environment where the equipment will be used, eliminating the need for travel and simplifying logistics.

Delivery and on-site training can be coordinated for an additional fee. This option is typically preferred due to the size and weight of the equipment, as well as the convenience of having everything set up and ready for immediate use.

Customers also have the option to pick up their equipment and receive training at our facility if preferred.

Please note:

  • When we deliver the equipment, it remains under our care and liability until it is safely installed at your facility.

  • If the equipment is picked up by the customer, responsibility transfers once it is loaded for transport.

Do you offer additional training materials?

Yes. We offer a comprehensive range of supplemental training tools designed to enhance classroom learning and provide a deeper understanding of transformer theory and application.

Induction Training Coils
Our induction training coils are a hands-on demonstration tool designed to help students visualize how a transformer operates.

  • Lightweight and handheld (approximately 14 inches wide, ~5 lbs each)

  • Includes a primary coil (120V input) and a secondary coil with a light indicator

  • Demonstrates electromagnetic induction in real time

As the coils are brought closer together, students can see the light intensity increase—visually demonstrating energy transfer. When used with the core, the system shows how magnetic fields are strengthened and fully utilized, providing a clear, physical understanding of how transformers function.

Transformer Training Books & Worksheets
We offer professionally developed transformer training manuals, with over 3,000 copies distributed across utilities and training programs.
